Shannon airport -Santa flight 2016

December 4, 2016

Over 100,000 entered for a seat with the Shannon airport santa flights. My name and Dylans name was drawn and we were offered the opportunity to take two seats on board one of their festive flights. This is the fourth year Shannon airport have held this memorable family fun day. The airport is transformed with entertaining elves and Mrs. Claus is on hand to welcome everyone.

The charge for each seat is €9.99. Shannon airport then donate a portion of the proceed to the Shannon group staff charities, ICAN (Irish children’s Arthritis Network) and Abalta special school ( for students with Autism.) As some of you may know my son has a diagnosis of autism. I like to help raise autism awareness and acceptance through the power of social media. It is always amazing to hear when such a big organization are helping to shine a much needed light onto two very important causes. Especially an organisation that I hold very close to my heart.

Shannon airport offer an autism programme to all passengers in need of assistance. On the day of your flight you just need to call to information desk and they will organize everything within minutes. I was very nervous with Dylan flying. I wasn’t sure if he would become overwhelmed or too anxious to board the plane. Knowing this program was available it helped put my mind at ease. They provided Dylan with a hat and wristband. This alerted staff to our assistance as soon as we stepped into the check in area. We were brought straight up to the top of the check in line and were given assistance through the airport with a helping hand. Even when Dylan got distracted in Duty Free by a massive Kinder egg we were ushered to the font of the line to buy it.

Travelling with a child that has special needs can be difficult. Many individuals with autism can find travelling through the airport a very difficult and scary experience. I couldn’t praise the staff at Shannon Airport enough for this programme. This programme made the world of difference to us moving through the airport today. I was very appreciative for helping Dylan’s day to go as smooth as possible.

The airport was transformed into a winter wonderland. There was a dj playing Christmas music with very energetic elves jumping around getting the party started. There was Minions, Olaf, Elisa and Elmos putting on a show and dancing with all the children. The Children were gifted with colouring books, selection boxes and lollipops. Shannon airport are equipped with a fabulous sensory room that is available to any passenger that have the important flyer wristband or hat. This room was simply beautiful. It was a calming area for when the music and party got too much for Dylan. The sensory room was filled with bean bags and sensory lights to create a translucent environment that was calming and soothing.

The plane was filled with festive music while all the stewardess dressed in elf costumes. The atmosphere in the plane was filled with an unbelivable exciting buzz. The pilot announces they have been advised by air traffic control that santa will do a sleigh to aircraft manoeuvre in order to visit the children on the plane. Santa arrived on the plane walking up and down the aisle chatting with all the children and taken photos. We were up in the air for 40 mins before returning to Shannon airport. On landing, the airport strip was filled with fire engines for photo opportunities.

Dylan and myself had a wonderful and magical day. I would definitely recommend to anyone with young children to enter the Santa flight lottery next year.
